Margate

$10,000 Challenge Recipient

City of Margate, Florida

In 2002, Margate began a long-standing tradition of organizing a special tribute each September 11th at our Fire Fighters park.  This year, in honor of the 10th anniversary of September 11, Margate is organizing a moving community event which will feature 1,000 American flags waving proudly side by side atop 8-foot flagpoles erected in perfect rows along an open 17-acre field in the heart of the City.

The intent is to provide a tribute to honor anyone affected by the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and unite the community in a special week-long volunteer service opportunity.  Flags will be planted to honor men and women currently serving or retired from anyUnited Statesmilitary branch.  Additionally, flags will be dedicated to first responders (firefighters, police officers, emergency medical technicians), beloved family members, friends and neighbors.  Each flag will be tagged to reflect the names of honorees.

This patriotic event will be a celebration of our freedom and give the public a chance to reflect upon the sacrifices made not only on September 11, 2001, but also daily by others on our behalf. It is a time to bring the community together to commemorate the 10th anniversary of September 11.  An Opening Ceremony is scheduled for Sunday,  September 11, 2011, and the Closing Ceremony will be Saturday, September 17.

Our volunteer action challenge is: “Don’t Ask What Margate Can Do For You, Ask What You Can Do For Margate!”  Below please find a listing of the organizations who have offered to help make the City’s celebration a success:

Volunteer hours will be tracked through volunteer logs kept by activity team leaders who will be supervised by the 9/11 Margate Committee.  Community service hours will be tracked accordingly.

The marketing for the event began by promoting a dress down day for all 600 Margateemployees who participate in the event.  Additionally, promotional literature was distributed by volunteers walking in the City’s 4th of July parade and other City- sponsored events.  A local sign company is donating signage to promote the event, and the Chamber of Commerce has taken the lead to promote the event among all City businesses.  The official press release was distributed to all major television, radio and print sources, and a Public Service Announcement is featured on local Public Access Channel 78.

Sponsorship levels suitable for major corporations, small businesses, civic groups and individuals have been established to raise the funding to cover the costs of the flags and freight delivery to the City.

The Opening Ceremony will include four moments of silence timed to commemorate the tragic timeline of the attacks on September 11th.  The Opening Ceremony will begin Sunday, September 11th at 8:30 a.m. and end at approximately 10:30 a.m.  The City has requested a flyover to end the Opening Ceremony.  The Program Chair is coordinating speakers, singers, and musicians to round out the program.  From September 11 until September 17, the public will be welcomed to show respect and deference to the sacrifice of those lost on September 11, 2001, as well as to pay personal tributes to flag honorees.

Emphasis will be placed on the opening and closing ceremonies to highlight the benefit of communities working together to heal through times of adversity.  At a time when all levels of government are facing the ire of the public because of the fiscal decline felt by many,Margatefeels it is important to create a sense of community and rally together despite fiscal challenges.  There is no charge to attend any of the ceremonies, and admission to the field is free. This event is the first public-private partnership of this magnitude in the City ofMargate(pop. 53,284). Margatewelcomes the opportunity to create an annual commemorative event with the invaluable assistance of volunteer service by residents and business owners.
