Project Responsibility Making An Impact on the Queens Community

Overall Service Activity(s) Need:

This Call to Action will collaborate with organizations and volunteers, who are set to create a ripple effect accross the Queens,NYC community while participating in three creative and innovative service projects.

Project One: 9/11 Day of Rememberance Prayer Vigil, Career Counseling for Adult Residents at the Saratoga Family Inn.

Program Need Issue: The majority of the residents housed at this homeless shelter are unemployed due to a variety of reasons, tragic experiences, poor self-esteem, lack of credentials i.e. High School Diploma, zero job experience, etc. We would like to have the opportunity to mentor the residents as we pay tribute and reflect upon the tragedy that occured on Sept. 11, 2001. In New York City, the majority of the victims were killed at their place of business. In the line of duty, whether they were employed as corporate executives, clerks, custodial staff or rescue workers. We believe that the victims believed in "The true joy of life...being used for a purpose." George Bernard Shaw. Our hope is that they too will begin the process that is necessary to market themselves and acquire skills in order to obtain employment to be used for a purpose.

The Number Of Volunteers Expected: 10-20 Skilled Professionals, 200 additional volunteers to donate gift cards, makeup, white blouses, white shirts, ties, black/navy skirts, stockings, black shoes, briefcases.

What Volunteers Are Expected To Accomplish:

We are seeking volunteers in the following arenas:

Skilled Licensed Social Workers and Counselors, HR Professionals, Entrepreneurs, Teachers,  Bi-Lingual Interpeters, Fashion Stylists, Job Recruiters and Non-Skilled Volunteers.

Volunteer incentive is to give the residents at Saratoga the opportunity to have the confidence to enter the job market. The day of activity will end with a prayer vigil to honor those who loss their lives on that tragic day.

Project Two: Donation of School Supplies to 150 Children Residing at the Saratoga Family Inn Grades Pre-K to 6. Donation of School and Art Supplies to the Lucille Rose Day Care Center in Far Rockaway Queens, NY lesson plan designed for children on 9/11

Program Need: According to the staff members at the Saratoga Family Inn., at the beginning of the school year the children/residents are in need of school supplies and uniforms. We will also donate school and art supplies to the Lucille Rose Day Care Center which is located in an underserved area in Queens, NY. Many of the parents of these children are struggling financially and we would like to assist.

The Number of Volunteers Expected: 200 needed to donate the following items: Notebooks, pens, pencils, loose-leaf paper, index cards, rulers, erasers, calculators, activity planners, construction paper, crayons, dictionary/ thesaurus, flash cards, school uniforms, socks

What Volunteers Are Expected to Accomplish: We will need 25 volunteers to package and to donate supplies and deliver to the Saratoga Family Inn and the Lucille Rose Day Care Center. Would like the teachers to plan an activity around the subject of

Project Three: Care Packages for Veteran Residents at the St. Albans Veterans Hospital in Queens, NY and to soldiers seving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Program Need: In collaboration with the volunteer department at the St. Albans Vetrans Hospital and the US Armed Forces ,we would like to donate care packages to those who served our country and are confined to the hospital.

Number of Vounteers Needed: Our goal is to collect items and to prepare packages for 500 Veteran patients and soldiers abroad.

Volunteers Are Expected To: Donate supplies and assist in the preparation of making care packages

Our organization will solicit volunteers via our mailing list, flyers, word of mouth, organizational listserv, social media, and our via our website. We will host approx 2-3 focus groups in order to market our plan of action for service to potential volunteers. All volunteers will be informed that their service and contributiions will be held in the same spirit that unified Americans everywhere who needed to assist immediately after the attack on our nation.
