NASCAR Unites to Remember America’s Heroes

History of Support – NASCAR’s 9-11 Legacy

The NASCAR community has a 10-year history of honoring and remembering the sacrifices of so many of our country’s heroes because of September 11th.  Michigan International Speedway began this legacy of service by hosting the Spirit of America Blood Drive on 9-11.  This blood drive is the nation’s largest 9-11 blood drive event. The Spirit of America has collected a grand total of 7,546 units of blood, potentially benefiting 22,638 people since its inception in 2002.  The blood drive’s success caught the eye of The NASCAR Foundation, which expanded the program in 2006 – 2009 to race tracks and corporate headquarters, 40+ locations in all, across the country.  To date, the NASCAR Industry’s combined efforts on 9-11 have collected 17,946 pints of blood with the potential to save more than 53,838 lives.

9-11 Partnership for 2011 “NASCAR Unites to Remember America’s Heroes: Tenth Anniversary of 9-11”

In 2011, The NASCAR Foundation launched NASCAR Unites, an industry initiative that creates an opportunity for NASCAR fans, drivers, teams, tracks, sponsors and more to unite to improve the lives of children across the nation. NASCAR Unites engages the sport in a collaborative effort to support children’s causes through volunteering, fundraising, sharing inspirational stories and unifying to make a difference.

In the spirit of the NASCAR Unites campaign, the NASCAR Industry will unite this year to remember and honor those lost on 9-11 and those who have served because of 9-11 by engaging teams, tracks and drivers to build awareness and by engaging our fan base.

Here are a few highlights of additional efforts planned for this year’s 9-11 remembrance:

  • The NASCAR Foundation will encourage more than 100,000 fans to commit to doing good deeds and, in doing so, to serve 500,000 volunteer hours by engaging the NASCAR fans in attendance at Richmond International Raceway, reaching out via WWW.NASCAR.COM/Unites website, email, and social media assets, and engaging the 75 million NASCAR fans nationwide.
  • The NASCAR Foundation and Fisher House will unite to raise funds for families of wounded service members currently undergoing treatment.  NASCAR Unites wristbands will be available for a $5 donation with 50% of the funds staying with the local Fisher House in Bethesda, MD.  Volunteers at Richmond International Raceway September 9th and 10th will educate fans on NASCAR Unites and collect donations for NASCAR Unites wristbands.
  • NASCAR will bring service members from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD to the Richmond race through the Troops to the Track program, a partnership with NASCAR and Armed Forces Foundation. The program provides over 100 wounded service members, or service members in jobs that are particularly emotional and physically demanding, an opportunity to get away from the challenges they face each day with an exclusive, VIP-style NASCAR race day experience which includes race credentials, garage tours, meet-and-greets with drivers and owners, recognition at the drivers’ meeting, and tickets to the race.
  • Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company will run special tires on all 43 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race cars during the September 10th race in RIchmond.  All tires used during the race will have “Support our Troops” message on the tire wall and will be autographed by NASCAR Drivers for an online auction to benefit three military charities: Support Our Troops, Wounded Warriors, & Fisher House.
  • Bass Pro Shops, Office Depot, and 3M are among five NASCAR teams that will be running specialized paint schemes for the race at Richmond International Raceway on September 10, 2011 to honor the brave firefighters and first responders who lost their lives on 9-11 when responding to the terrorist attacks.  Funds raised from the sale of die cast replica cars will benefit three military veterans who are quadruple amputees through a partnership with the Stephen Siller Foundation, which honors a fallen member of FDNY, who lost his life on 9-11 in the World Trade Center.
  • The NASCAR Industry will promote the Day of Service and Remembrance through all media available including radio (MRN/ SIRIUS), TV (SPEED/ ESPN), online, at track and social media assets.

The NASCAR Foundation is proud to be a part of the efforts to commemorate the 10th Anniversary or 9-11 and will continue to build upon the momentum from this year into years to come – with a continued emphasis on encouraging community service amongst NASCAR’s fans.
